One Camera Channel Shows a Black Screen (Others Work)
Three cameras display fine; one shows solid black (different from “NO SIGNAL” text — black means the channel may be receiving something, just not displayable video, or the camera is dead). One dark channel is how fleets end up with no footage of the exact side of the truck the incident happened on.
The 3 most likely causes
Cameras live a hard life: heat cycles, vibration, water intrusion at the housing. Infrared LEDs failing first (night image gone, day image fine) is a classic warning sign before total failure.
The single most abused component in the system. Door hinges, trailer connections, and tight radius bends chafe cables; corroded pins in aviation connectors kill channels intermittently before permanently.
The physical input can fail, or the channel’s settings (standard/resolution) may have been changed. A config cause is instantly fixable; a dead port means moving the camera to a spare channel.
What to try first
- Do the swap test: move the black channel’s camera cable to a known-working port. Problem follows the camera → camera/cable. Problem stays with the port → recorder side.
- Inspect the full cable run for chafe points and check connector pins for corrosion or bent pins.
- If the camera works on another port, check the original channel’s configuration before condemning the hardware.
- Night-vision-only failures point to the camera’s IR array — the camera is on its way out; plan replacement.

If the checks above didn’t bring it back, the fault is deeper — configuration, platform, or firmware level. That’s exactly what the $50 flat Remote Diagnostic & Fix Session handles: one remote session, most fixes in 15–30 minutes, full refund if it can’t be resolved.

The channel comes back when I wiggle the connector. Fixed?
No — that’s a failing connection announcing itself. It will die permanently, usually within weeks, and usually right before you need the footage. Replace or properly reseat and secure the connector now.
Which do I replace — camera or cable?
The swap test tells you: if the camera works on another channel with another cable, the cable is the culprit. A remote session can walk whoever’s at the vehicle through the test and confirm the exact part in minutes, so you buy one part instead of three.
