The device may even be online with live video working, but the map position is frozen, jumping, or parked somewhere the truck isn’t. Video and GPS travel different paths in the system, so one working proves nothing about the other.
The 3 most likely causes
The GPS antenna needs sky view. Buried under a metal dash, tucked behind heated/metallic windshield tint, or with a crushed coax lead, it can’t hear satellites. Placement problems produce exactly the “worked sometimes, then quit” pattern.
MDVRs typically have separate, identical-looking connectors for GPS and 4G antennas. They get swapped during installs and repairs constantly — everything half-works and nobody knows why.
GPS reporting can be disabled or misconfigured in the device (reporting interval, module enable), and on rare units the GPS module itself fails while everything else runs.

- Check the GPS antenna location: it needs unobstructed sky view — top of dash minimum, away from metal and metallic tint.
- Trace both antenna leads and confirm GPS and 4G aren’t swapped at the recorder.
- In the device menu, check GPS status/satellite count. Zero satellites with a good antenna = lead, connector, or module.

Location shows a position from days ago. Is the device off?
Not necessarily — a frozen position with live video working means the device is online but GPS specifically is failing: antenna, lead, or module. That’s a different (and usually cheaper) fix than a dead device.
Why does the map show the truck jumping around or in the wrong city?
