MDVR Hard Drive Not Detected or HDD Error

The recorder reports no disk, an HDD error, or storage that appears and disappears — often correlating suspiciously with rough roads. No detected drive means no recording, so this symptom is silent footage loss until fixed.

The 3 most likely causes

1. Caddy / tray seating and vibration

Most MDVRs use a removable drive caddy — and a caddy that isn’t fully locked, or a drive loose in its tray, disconnects under vibration. “Disk vanishes on bad roads” is the signature.

2. The wrong kind of drive

Desktop hard drives aren’t built for a vehicle’s vibration and temperature swings. Standard drives in mobile duty fail early and erratically. Mobile-rated/surveillance drives — or an SSD — are the correct hardware for the environment.

3. Drive failure or format mismatch

Drives die, and vehicle duty accelerates it. Separately, a drive formatted on a PC (or pulled from another system) may not be recognized until formatted in the device’s own menu.

What to try first

  1. Power down, remove and firmly reseat the drive caddy; confirm the lock engages fully and the drive is snug in the tray.
  2. Format the drive in the device menu (not on a computer) and see if it’s detected and stays detected.
  3. Check drive health on a PC with a SMART tool — reallocated sectors and pending sectors mean the drive is dying; replace it.
  4. If replacing: choose a mobile/surveillance-rated drive or an SSD sized for your loop-window needs.

If the checks above didn’t bring it back, the fault is deeper — configuration, platform, or firmware level. That’s exactly what the $50 flat Remote Diagnostic & Fix Session handles: one remote session, most fixes in 15–30 minutes, full refund if it can’t be resolved.

Common questions

Should I use an SSD in my MDVR?

If the unit supports it, SSDs eliminate the vibration problem entirely and are the most reliable option for harsh routes. Check the recorder’s supported drive types and capacity limits first — a remote session can confirm compatibility for your exact model.

The drive works at my desk but not in the truck. How?

That’s the vibration signature: a marginal caddy connection or a drive with early-stage damage holds together on a bench and drops out on the road. Reseat and secure the caddy, then health-check the drive before trusting it with evidence footage.
