MDVR Keeps Rebooting, Restarting, or Shutting Down
The recorder restarts on its own — randomly, every engine crank, or minutes into a route. Every unclean restart risks corrupting the configuration and the recordings, so a rebooting MDVR is a no-signal and missing-footage problem in the making.
The 3 most likely causes
The classic. B+ must be constant battery power; ACC is the ignition sense line. Wired wrong (both switched, both constant, or swapped), the unit brown-outs on crank, hard-cuts at key-off, or never sleeps and drains the battery until low-voltage cutoff reboots it.
Engine crank pulls system voltage down hard; a unit fed through thin wire, corroded connections, or a poor chassis ground dips below its cutoff and resets. Same story mid-route when high-draw equipment kicks in.
MDVRs have configurable shutdown delay and battery-protection thresholds. Set wrong, the unit powers off aggressively or restarts in loops that look like hardware failure but are pure configuration.
What to try first
- Verify wiring with a meter: B+ shows battery voltage with the key out; ACC shows voltage only with ignition on. Anything else — rewire before chasing ghosts.
- Measure voltage at the recorder’s power plug during engine crank. Below ~9V on a 12V system (or the unit’s spec) = fix the supply path or ground.
- Check the unit’s shutdown delay and low-voltage protection settings against your vehicle’s electrical reality.
- Inspect the inline fuse holder and power connector — heat discoloration or looseness means resistance, and resistance means voltage sag under load.

The MDVR reboots every time the engine starts. Normal?
