MDVR Shows “No Signal” or “No Sync” on Camera Channels

The 3 most likely causes

1. Corrupted device configuration (NVRAM)

The most common root cause on units that used to work fine. It happens when the MDVR gets hard power cuts at key-off instead of a clean shutdown cycle — almost always because the ACC and B+ wires are both landed on switched power. Every ignition-off is a crash, and eventually the stored channel configuration corrupts.

2. Voltage drop at the camera

Long cable runs, corroded aviation connectors, or a weak chassis ground can starve the camera. It browns out and the channel drops — often intermittently, worse when it’s cold or when other equipment is drawing power. Measure voltage at the camera end of the cable, not at the recorder.

3. Camera / channel standard mismatch

If a camera was ever replaced, an AHD camera on a channel configured for CVBS (or the wrong resolution setting, e.g. 1080p camera on a 720p channel) produces exactly this symptom. The camera is fine, the recorder just can’t decode what it’s sending.

What to try first

  1. Power the system down, unplug and firmly reseat the aviation connector on the affected camera at both ends.
  2. Swap the affected camera’s cable to a known-working channel. If the problem follows the camera, it’s the camera/cable; if it stays with the channel, it’s the recorder’s config or port.
  3. In the recorder menu, check the channel’s video standard and resolution match the camera’s spec (AHD vs CVBS, 720p vs 1080p).
  4. Check your wiring: B+ must be on constant battery power, ACC on ignition-switched power. If both are on switched power, the unit has been crash-shutting every day — fix this or the fault returns.
